Bookkeeping vs. Tax Prep: Who Does What for Your Small Business
Clear roles, cleaner handoffs.
Tax time feels chaotic when the books were never finished. Owners often ask one provider to “just handle the taxes,” only to discover that half the work is reconstructing last year’s transactions. Separating bookkeeping from tax preparation — and knowing who does which — prevents that scramble and keeps everyone inside their professional lane.
Linked-do-Books provides remote bookkeeping: organized, reconciled, human-reviewed books and plain-language monthly context. Tax preparation, tax advice, audit representation, and tax debt resolution stay with licensed tax professionals. When those needs come up, Linked-do-Books refers clients rather than stretching bookkeeping into tax practice.
What bookkeeping covers.
Bookkeeping is the ongoing system that answers: What happened in the business, and do the accounts agree with the bank? In a Linked-do-Books engagement, that typically means:
- Organizing transactions so income and expenses land in consistent categories.
- Reconciling bank and credit card accounts so balances have a dependable foundation.
- Managing AP/AR and invoicing when included in your plan (Growth and Full-Service add more of this operational support).
- Reporting — Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet on the schedule of your package.
- Explaining the month in a short, plain-language note: what moved, why it matters, what to consider next.
Optional services include Books Clean-Up for backlog catch-up, E-Commerce Bookkeeping for online sellers, and CFO-Lite Advisory ($1,250/mo) for qualified clients who want monthly financial context plus a structured quarterly business review. CFO-Lite is educational business-finance context. It is not tax, legal, audit, IRS-representation, tax-resolution, or investment advice, and it does not promise growth, tax savings, or a particular result. Monthly packages: Starter $249, Growth $399, Full-Service $649 per month (or 15% off with annual prepay). Cancel anytime under the terms of your engagement.
What tax prep covers.
Tax preparation is the licensed work of applying tax law to your facts for a filing period: preparing returns, calculating tax due or refund, and advising on tax positions within that professional relationship. Related licensed work can include representation before the IRS, resolving tax debt, and formal tax planning. That work requires the right credential for the task (for example, CPA, Enrolled Agent, or tax attorney, depending on the matter). Bookkeeping experience does not authorize tax advice or representation. Linked-do-Books’s site is explicit: tax advice, legal advice, audit work, and IRS representation remain outside the bookkeeping service scope. The monthly note is bookkeeping context, not a tax opinion.
Why the distinction protects you.
Blurring the roles creates three common problems:
- Incomplete records at filing time — The preparer spends billable hours reconstructing books instead of preparing the return.
- Scope confusion — An owner assumes “my bookkeeper will handle the IRS letter,” when representation was never part of the engagement.
- Overpromised outcomes — Marketing that ties bookkeeping to guaranteed deductions or audit results is a compliance risk.
Linked-do-Books does not guarantee tax outcomes, tax savings, or IRS results. The Linked-do-Books Guarantee covers our bookkeeping work (a 30-day money-back guarantee and an accuracy guarantee), not tax results. Clear roles mean you know who to call for missing receipts versus who to call for a notice from the IRS.
How the handoff works with Linked-do-Books.
During the year: You (or your team) invite Linked-do-Books into QuickBooks, Xero, Shopify, Stripe, PayPal, or other platforms as an authorized collaborator when directed. You send statements, receipts, and invoices through the designated client upload page — never credentials, bank logins, SSNs, or full card numbers through public forms or chat. You receive reviewed books and the monthly note once records for the period are ready.
When tax season (or a tax question) arrives: Linked-do-Books’s role is to help you arrive with organized, reconciled records and reporting that a licensed preparer can work from. Preparation, filing, tax elections, and advice on tax positions belong to your licensed tax professional. If you need help finding that professional — including situations involving audits or tax debt — Linked-do-Books can refer you to independent licensed tax professionals, such as Enrolled Agents, CPAs, or tax attorneys. We do not receive referral fees today. See the IRS Audit Referral and Tax Debt Help pages on the site for those referral paths.
What Linked-do-Books will not do:
- Prepare or file your income tax returns as part of the bookkeeping packages;
- Represent you before the IRS;
- Resolve tax debt;
- Give tax advice disguised as a bookkeeping tip.
If a question is really a tax question, the honest answer is a referral — not a stretch.
A simple decision guide:
- Transactions uncategorized; reconciliations months behind — start with Books Clean-Up, then a monthly plan.
- Books mostly current; need a steady close and clearer reports — Starter, Growth, or Full-Service bookkeeping.
- Want quarterly decision-oriented financial conversation (qualified) — CFO-Lite Advisory (separate scope).
- Need a return filed, tax planning, or representation — Licensed tax professional (referral available).
What “better prepared for tax time” means here.
Linked-do-Books’s homepage promise is practical: current reports and plain-language context make it easier to spot questions early and bring more organized records to tax-time conversations. That is preparation of records, not a promise that your tax bill will drop or that an audit will go a certain way. Owners who stay current month to month usually spend less with their tax preparer on cleanup — and make fewer last-minute guesses. That is the handoff working as designed.
